The Department of Anesthesiology is among the largest academic anesthesiology departments in the nation with 150 faculty (clinical and research), 48 residents, and 16 fellows in multiple disciplines. The Department divisions cover Ambulatory Surgery, Surgical Subspecialties, Cardiothoracic, Obstetrics, Trauma, Liver Transplants, Regional Anesthesiology, Pediatrics, Critical Care Medicine, Pain Medicine and Neurosurgical and Vascular Anesthesiology. The department provides clinical services at the Emory University Hospital, Emory University Hospital Midtown, Grady Memorial Hospital, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the VA Medical Center. As the only academic anesthesiology department in the greater Atlanta metropolitan area, the faculty and mid-level providers serve in an extremely high acuity environment.
The Chair of Anesthesiology has direct responsibility to build and lead all Anesthesiology programs including all clinical, educational and research endeavors involving the faculty/physicians of the Department of Anesthesiology with responsibility for the continued development of an academically distinguished department. The Chair serves as a member of the senior leadership team of the School of Medicine that establishes the education, research and outreach priorities and leads efforts to ensure the competitiveness of the medical education program. As Chair, s/he is responsible for oversight and management of the Anesthesiology faculty while advancing innovative scientific research programs.
As Chief of Anesthesiology for Emory Healthcare, the Chair also works closely with the Physician Group President to ensure high quality Anesthesiology service to all patients, to coordinate Anesthesiology services across all medical facilities, and to exercise appropriate operational and financial management of Anesthesiology physicians and services. The Chair works closely with the Dean of the Emory School of Medicine to develop the academic and research programs involving Anesthesiology care and plan new Anesthesiology programs and services.
