| The Research Transplant Nurse assists transplant Principal Investigators (PI), through delegated authority, with conducting transplant clinical trials per federal, state and institutional guidelines. This position assists with responsibilities during all phases of trials including pre-study implementation through study closure are included in the scope of this position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE
Assists in the evaluation of candidate's suitability for transplant study, including patient/family interviews, coordinating the medical, surgical, laboratory, radiological, psychological, and nutritional evaluation processes, reviewing evaluation results to verify accuracy, and working closely with physicians, as necessary. Ensures that all inclusion and exclusion criteria are met.
Coordinates candidate testing while on transplant waitlist. Reviews liver transplant (top 20) testing labs, diagnostic tests, call patient screen, patient call about study communication to physician pre-transplant coordinator. Maintains communication with patient, referring physicians, other PIs and transplant team members while candidate is on the waiting list.
Coordinates recipient post-transplant care including arrangement of inpatient admission, laboratory testing, imaging examinations, clinic visits, and coordination of care via referring and primary care physician. Reviews testing to recognize potential problems, abnormal diagnostic findings, and/or significant changes, and coordinates required care per physician order. Maintains communication with patient and family, multidisciplinary team, primary care physicians, other health care providers. Ensures that all required testing and treatments are done per protocol, assessing patients for adverse events, drawing pharmacokinetic and other research samples, and coordinating patient follow-up. May include administering investigational drugs.
Educates candidate, transplant recipient, family and/or caregiver about study discharge teaching which may include evaluation process, OPTN regulations, organ allocation, waiting phase, post-operative phase, immunosuppressant and long term prescription therapy, post-operative complications, and physical/psychological effects of transplant
Maintains transplant waitlist via various UNOS web programs. Coordinates recipient transplant including accessing United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) donor website, contacting the potential recipient, assessing possible recipient current medical condition, notifying various hospital departments, and communicating to the appropriate transplant staff. Rescreens patient when they come in for transplant studies. Maintains knowledge of, and compliance with, Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN), UNOS and other regulatory policies.
Participates in after hour call responsibility for pre- and post-transplant patients, and referring primary care physicians. Returns calls includes verbal assess of patient complaints, and providing guidance to patients, and referring primary care physicians as directed by physician order.
Remains knowledgeable of new procedures and practices in transplantation and research. Through reading literature, attending workshops, seminars and conference, and by participating in professional organizations.
