The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology supports the GI Clinical Research Enterprise (GICRE), which is a centralized clinical trials office in close proximity to the Vanderbilt Hospital and Clinic. Currently, the office manages and coordinates approximately 200 research projects, comprised of 70% industry-sponsored clinical trials and 30% investigator-initiated studies. The clinical trials enterprise employs experienced research nurses, clinical research coordinators, regulatory and quality assurance staff, and program managers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Maintain detailed, organized records of experiments, results (electronic form), and inventory of tissues and reagents
• Follow approved experimental protocols, with animal welfare and health records maintained in compliance with Office of Animal Welfare Assurance
• Conduct common animal procedures e.g. euthanasia, harvesting blood and tissues, tumor growth measurement (e.g. calipers, ultrasound)
• Generate and maintain colorectal cancer cell lines and patient-derived xenografts, as well as treat established xenografts with anti-cancer drugs and monitor their effect over time
• Demonstrate proficiency in multiple routes of administration of colorectal cancer cells/tissues (e.g. subcutaneous, orthotopic, tail-vein injections)
• Treat established tumors with anti-cancer drugs administered via multiple mechanisms (e.g. peritoneal administration, gavage)
• Perform non-invasive longitudinal monitoring of tumor progression by in vivo imaging systems utilizing bioluminescence or fluorescence imaging
• Conceptualize and refine experiments, troubleshoot technical issues, and interpret results
