The Licensed Vocational Nurse position in the Specialty Clinics Nursing Service at the El Paso VA Health Care System. The LVN is an advocate for the patient and the patient's family and promotes safety by practicing within their scope of practice and in accordance with local policy and procedures. The practice of vocational nursing must be performed under the supervision of an RN, APRN, physician, physician assistant, podiatrist or dentist. El Paso VA Healthcare System is an outpatient facility serving medical, surgical, and psychiatric clinics, in addition to community-based outpatient clinics (CBOC). Home-Based Primary Care is provided in the veteran's home and tele-health options are used throughout the system. Substantial portions of the catchment area are rural. The LVN position in the Specialty Care clinics at the El Paso VA Health Care System is responsible for the daily operations in support of Specialty Care provider with the following duties: patient screening with vital signs and reason for seeking care documented, completion of clinical reminders, medication administration via oral, intramuscular and topical routes, Immunizations, patient calls, routing and follow up of patient messages, as well as dressing changes and assisting providers. Each assigned LVN will conduct blood pressure and glucose checks as ordered by provider staff. All clinical documentation is entered in the electronic patient record with strict security protocols followed. The clinics will include but not limited to the following; neurology, urology, cardiology, hematology/oncology, endocrinology, pulmonology, gastroenterology and infectious disease clinic. Floating may also include other clinics such as Primary Care, other CBOC's and the off-site VA Sleep Center. Competencies will be provided to insure the employee has appropriate training to accomplish these duties. Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over; Heavy carrying, 45 pounds and over; Straight pulling (1 hour); Pulling hand over hand (0.5 hour); Pushing (1 hour); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (6 hours); Standing (6 hours); Crawling (1 hour); Kneeling (1 hour); Repeated bending (1 hour); Climbing, legs only (1 hour); Both legs required; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Both eyes required; Depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Ability to distinguish shades of colors; Hearing (aid may be permitted); Mental & emotional stability.
