The incumbent must be able to work successfully in all aspects of Nuclear Medicine Imagine without the benefit of direct, onsite physician supervision. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for data acquisition, processing, preparation and transmission of complicated, completed diagnostic images to the core facility located at the Ann Arbor VAMC for Nuclear Medicine physician interpretation. The patient population served are adults 18 year and older. The incumbent must be able to evaluate and provide care based on the special needs associate with the age of the patient. functions as a lead technologist for NMTs at and below the journey level (GS-9) and other unit staff. The lead technologist is responsible for assignment of work to ensure effective unit operation and maximizing use of unit resources. Serves as the Radiation Safety Officer and is a member of the Radiation Safety Committee serving as a voting member and represents the nuclear medicine section during NRC inspections. Purchase cardholder, responsible for ordering various supplies for Nuclear Medicine and processing payments. Duties include but are not limited to: Responsible for the acquisition and creation of an appropriate image data set sufficient to answer the clinical question(s) posed by referring physicians is a critical part of the incumbent's responsibilities. Orders, receives, stores and properly disposes of radionuclides and non-radioactive kits and supplies. Performs, documents, and maintains appropriate checks and surveys as required. Elute radioactive technetium generators if being utilized. Performs quantitative and qualitative checks and controls for purity as required. Prepares and administers oral and parental radiopharmaceuticals for patient studies with strict adherence to NRC, FDA and EPA regulations and adequate sterile/aseptic technique. Dilutes, performs quality control and assays radiopharmaceuticals. Documents kit and patient specific activity concentration and dosage as required. Collects and process patient blood for MUGA Scans. Performs preparation of reagents, controls and standards. Daily calibrates and performs other quality control, performing and documenting daily radiation detection surveys. Utilizes and administers non-radioactive drugs, as it pertains to specific organ testing, such as heparin. Maintains and demonstrates proficiency in various techniques of venipuncture, i.e., angiocath, butterfly, syringe, and needle. Performs procedures entailing the production of organ maps of distribution of radioactivity following their administration to the patient. Performs static imaging of brain, lung, liver/spleen, kidneys, bone thyroid and other organs as techniques are developed and adapted for use. Performs dynamic and tomographic organ imaging techniques such as venograms, renograms cerebral flow studies, three phase bone scan and others as necessary. Sets up and calibrates the imaging equipment and instruments on a daily basis, checking their performance and reliability prior to beginning any patient study. Completes appropriate patient prep, data, acquisitions processing, analysis of data and computer transmission to the core facility. Retrieves scan interpretation reports from the core facility mainframe system and provides to the Medical Clerk for distribution to appropriate areas within the Medical Center Responsible for proper quality control and equipment maintenance for all instrumentation. Must be able to recognize malfunctions and arrange for service to minimize equipment downtime. Maintains and demonstrates proficiency in the performance and analysis of complex nuclear medicine procedures including first pass, rest and/or exercise radionuclide ventriculograms, myocardial perfusion and myocardial infarct imaging. Maintains and demonstrates proficiency in the use and maintenance of all instrumentation. This includes but is not limited to gamma camera systems, dedicated mini-computers, health physics survey instruments, dose calibrators, well counter and uptake probes. Seeks and obtains consultation with a nuclear medicine physician concerning complex or unusual clinical problems, as appropriate. Work schedule: 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM (Monday through Friday).
