This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Learn more The incumbent practices as an ICU/Step-Down/Telemetry clinical nurse manager (CNM) who has 24-hour responsibility for the operation of a patient care unit/area in the Nursing Section of Patient Care Service within the Detroit VAMC. Provides leadership in the planning and implementing of care to patients in the medical center. These units specialize in providing care to critically ill veterans or intensive cardiac monitoring. The age of patients range from young adult through geriatric. Common diagnoses include post operative surgical cases, acute myocardial infarction, lethal dysrhythmias, respiratory distress and/or failure, acute gastrointestinal bleeding, sepsis, diabetic keto acidosis, acute renal failure and multi-system failure. The incumbent demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others. The CNM demonstrates performance and leadership that is broad enough to improve the care for a group of patients. The CNM is responsible for the documented outcomes at the unit level. Program is defined as substantial coordinated group of activities impacting patients and/or employees. The CNM demonstrates Leads and organizes delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, including access to care and discharge planning. Uses advanced clinical knowledge/judgement to promote staff involvement in planning. decision making, and evaluating outcomes. Systematically evaluates current practice, and formulating outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within an area of expertise Guides, develops and support staff from a leadership perspective Uses professional standards of care, scientific evidence, and practice to evaluate programs and/or service activities. The CNM is responsible for the following: Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting priorities and preparing schedules for completion of work Assigns work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration to the difficulty and the requirements of the assignments and the capabilities subordinates Evaluates the performance and competencies of subordinates Makes recommendations for appointments, advancements or reassignments of subordinates provides mentoring, advice, counsel, or instruction to subordinate personnel on work and administrative matters hears and resolves complaints of subordinates and refers more serious complaints not resolved to higher level supervisors recommends and/or takes disciplinary action where appropriate identified developmental and training needs to subordinates and makes provision for such development and training.
