The section chief position includes clinical and surgical capabilities and dedicated teaching time for Tulane 1st & 3rd year eye residents. The Ophthalmologist, Section Chief will function as a supervisor of the Eye Clinic Team Specialty Clinic, Resident Training Program, Visual Impairment Service Team and Surgery with clinical and surgical responsibilities. We have an active affiliation with Tulane University and a faculty appointment is anticipated for the selected Physician. Faculty rank will be dependent upon academic credentials and experience. To fully meet the qualifications of this position, applicants should have experience in resident teaching and be currently practicing clinical and surgical ophthalmology and experience in teaching residents. Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: -Provides Ophthalmology care to Veterans both clinically and surgically to a high population of cataract, glaucoma, retinal disease and diabetic patients. -Specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of medical and surgical diseases and conditions of the eye, its related structures, and visual pathways. -Examines and treats patients functioning as a comprehensive ophthalmologist clinically and surgically and determine the need for surgical or non-surgical treatment of routine, urgent or emergent patients. -Performs preoperative evaluations and informed consent for patients. -Performs surgical procedures related to injuries and diseases of the eye and visual system. -Utilizes laser (Pl, YAG) on the orbit, extraocular muscles, anterior and posterior segments of the eye, and surrounding structures, as well as intra-ocular injections and cataract extractions with lens implantations. -Ensures appropriate post-operative care and follow-up is conducted on patients. -Performs non-medical treatments, including issuing prescriptions of lenses and aids for low vision. -Performs intravitreal injections for retinal diseases including exudative age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. -Performs ancillary testing including Ocular Coherence Tomography, ultrasound, fluorescein angiography analysis. -Collaborates with other physician specialists and medical staff in overall treatment of patient's medical conditions. -Supervises ophthalmology residents in clinic and in surgery. -Other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: 8am - 4:30pm; Monday - Friday Financial Disclosure Report: Not required Recruitment/Relocation Incentive: May be authorized for highly-qualified applicants. Education Debt Repayment Program: Authorized for repayment of qualifying debt. Other important information: Pay: Competitive salary, may be eligible for annual performance bonus, typically eligible for regular salary increases. Paid Time Off: Annual leave at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period; Sick leave at the rate of four (4) hours per biweekly pay period; 10 paid Federal holidays per year. Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years' vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA. Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement). Incentives: Possible signing bonus, relocation assistance, and student loan repayment up to $200K for eligible debt. CME: Possible $1,000 per year stipend+ possible 1 week paid authorized absence to attend. Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided. Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction moonlighting on.
