The physician functions in the care of outpatient and inpatient diabetes and endocrinology patients. The role requires decision-making based on a broad knowledge base and experience in endocrinology. It is located at W. G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center, Salisbury, North Carolina. A diabetes and endocrinology physician is a medical provider that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of complex cases of diabetes and a wide variety of hormonal and metabolic conditions. Physicians must have completed endocrinology fellowships and be board eligible or certified in this specialty. The physician must hold a doctorate of medicine with recent experience in the evaluation and management of patients with diabetes and/or endocrinologic disorders. The physician is familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within this particular field(s). VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. VHA Physician Total Rewards. Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases Paid Time Off: 49-54 days of annual paid time offer per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 10 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME) Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting Duties include but are not limited to the following: Requires competence and basic management of type 1 and type 2 diabetes (including the use of insulin pumps), all types of thyroid disorders (including thyroid cancer), adrenal masses and dysfunction, pituitary tumors and dysfunction, disorders of calcium metabolism, male hypogonadism, osteoporosis and lipid disorders. Coordinates care wit RN/CDEs, general surgery, women's health, primary care and neurosurgery. Determines which patients are appropriate candidates for insulin pumps and/or continuous glucose sensors. Performs initial evaluation of patients referred for diagnostic assessment which includes history and physical examination, development of treatment plans, ordering and interpreting laboratory data, review of radiological data, initiating consultations and ordering medications. Specific to endocrinology, the physician is to evaluate patients for adverse side effects and of insulin, other medications used to treat diabetes, anti-thyroid medications and anti-resorptive therapies for osteoporosis. Provides initial inpatient evaluations for hospitalized diabetes and endocrinology patients, and is able to communicate recommendations to hospitalists and/or other consultative entities. Obtains and evaluates medical histories, performs physical examinations, and orders laboratory studies, radiographs, and other special examinations. Collects specimens for pathologic examination. Analyzes and interprets data, formulates problem lists, and establishes plans for solution of clinical problems. Provides supportive care and folio up, as well as arranges for consultations and other needed services for medical endocrinology section patients. Makes entries in patient's permanent medical records and maintains other records as required. Notifies physician colleagues on c I regarding any unusual or unexpected events or problems requiring direct physician consultation. Administers lifesaving procedures and medications to the extent authorized by training and certifications. Practices safety, environmental, a d/or infection control methods. Instructs other personnel assigned to health care team on preventive medicine programs and other appropriate medical activities and functions. Coordinates the delivery of complex outpatient and inpatient care with other members of the health care team. Evaluates, triage, treat and educate patients referred from any site. Initiates consultation requests to other health professionals to provide more comprehensive patient management and gathers follow up data. Includes working with all staffs to ensure compliance with clinical research requirements as necessary. Accomplishes progress notes, referral letters, narrative summaries and other documentation as required. Provides in-service education to clinic staff specific to area of expertise. Attends medical service, diabetes/endocrinology section, and hospital committee meetings as appropriate. Develops and write policies/procedures specific to medical interventions and subject monitoring. Assist in the determination, e aluation, & acquisition of devices/equipment utilized for medical monitoring and therapeutic intervention. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:45 AM to 4:30 PM
