The Nuclear Medicine Technologist position is in the Nuclear Medicine Service at Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital and is responsible for performing an extensive range of nuclear medicine procedures utilizing nuclear medicine imaging instrumentation and computer systems technologies. - Performs a wide variety of functional studies of organs/systems involving static and dynamic imaging procedures, the injection of radiopharmaceuticals and the use of such specialized equipment as integrated computer/ imaging systems, single photon emission tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET/CT). - Prepares and administers the proper radiopharmaceutical and study related drugs to the patient for clinical use, taking into account precautions relative to radiation hazard, sterility and absence of pyrogens, chemical quality, and radionuclide purity. - Has in depth knowledge of and understands the definition of a Medical Event, and the related procedures in order to properly document the event and to make reports and recommendations to the Radiation Safety Officer in order to comply with regulatory requirements. - Monitors/performs diagnostic nuclear imaging procedures taking into account patient positioning, proper collimation, photon density, format, instrumentation operation and quality of images that will provide essential information for the nuclear medicine physicians' diagnosis. - Independently performs computer processing of acquired data with responsibility to insure that the data is in the proper alignment and format for physician interpretation. - Provides technical expertise and planning pertaining to therapeutic and diagnostic imaging procedures, and consults with nuclear medicine physicians on additional tests or images that may be useful or clarify problems. - Therapeutic Procedures; Assists the Authorized User, Operations Manager and RSO in all aspects of therapeutic uses of radiopharmaceuticals including having the ability to communicate to patients both orally and in writing, post therapy radiation safety precautions to insure regulatory compliance. - Conducts quality control procedures on Nuclear and PET/CT equipment, reagents, and products by designing and implementing instrument equipment, reagent, and product check systems. - As required, maintains regulatory agency required records and enters patient information into the computer through the use of the VistA and GUI Packages.- Performs in-vitro studies including Schillings tests, Indium white blood cell tests, and GI bleed scans using labeled red blood cells.
