The Nurse Practitioner (NP) practices in the Transplant Department of the Operative Care Division (OCD) at the VA Portland Health Care System (VAPORHCS) which includes the Portland and Vancouver campuses and CBOC sites. Additionally, the NP may assume on-call activities with team members should the transplant program require it Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. Nurse Practitioners: A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected. Preferred Experience: Surgical or internal medicine experience preferred. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. The NP seeks to improve quality of patient care and provides specialty and primary care to pre and post kidney, liver transplant patients and hepatobiliary patients. In addition to traditional NP responsibilities, the Transplant NP conducts histories and physicals, formulates diagnoses based upon data collected and within scope of practice, initiates and adjusts therapeutic regimen including medications, orders laboratory tests and diagnostic studies/procedures, initiates consults and referrals, orders patient care supplies, performs procedures, dictates discharge summaries and clinic notes, and is responsible for an independent case load. The incumbent works collaboratively with other interdisciplinary team members in providing quality care and education. In addition to providing health care, the NP serves as a clinical resource and consultant to nurses, medical staff, interdisciplinary teams, and other health care providers in the care of pre and post kidney and liver transplant and hepatobiliary patients as well as addressing and improving system issues. The position oversees inpatient and outpatient case load. The Transplant NP shares in the development, evaluation, and communication of standards and plans of care as well as policies and procedures; serves on designated committees and task forces; and participates in research, research utilization, and program development. The Transplant NP is expected to participate in ongoing educational activities related to clinical knowledge and professional issues. The incumbent will seek experiences that reflect current clinical practice in order to maintain clinical skills and competence in transplantation.
